I can not sleep |
![]() ![]() |
As hard as I try, I cant sleep I find it impossible Its 10:58 pm at the moment, which isnt really THAT late but its a school night, and I know that as soon as I get to school I will be SO tired, and most likely take myself straight to sickbay to sleep for two periods! I know, I know. Im complaining but its really irritating when you lay in bed wide awake for hours and you just cant sleep, everynight. Generally, if Im on the phone until like... 11:30-ish I can sleep But if I try to get to sleep with my ipod playing softly, doing a little reading before bed... anything I just cant sleep. I decided I needed an early night tonight so I went to bed at about a quarter to 9. I couldnt sleep, so I wrote a letter. Listened to my ipod. Couldnt sleep. By this point it was 10:00. Then I turned the lights out and tried to sleep. But I couldnt. So I got up and decided to write and isfat about it! Becuase YES, it is fucking annoying that I cant sleep. Well it was good to get that out! But yeah, any suggestions for getting to sleep? Because its beggining to really affect me at school. Thank-you for listening! |

Whoa, when do you wake up? If you get to sleep at 11 and wake up at say 7, and still have to go back to sleep, you might have some sort of sleeping disorder. I'd get that checked into.

I've been battling sleeping problems ever since i was a teenager, heres some brief tips on how to get some good sleep.
excercise! get lots of it everyday go to bed at the same time everyday sleep works in cycles of about 2hours, so dont sleep in odd numbered hours only even. if you are still having trouble, i suggest either taking valerian or drinking milk mixed with honey, heated in the microwave, this drink releases seretonin! |
ive been dealing with a sleeping disorder since yr 9 and from what i can gather lily, if you're getting 8hours and are still tired and run down, then you need to see a doctor. as for getting to sleep, stop listening to your ipod for one. a lot of people can go to sleep with music playing, softly or the opposite, but i dont think its working for u. it certainly doesnt work for me, i cant even hear a tv in the distance without getting frustrated. so stop listening to it. and if you're reading in bed, lying down, before trying to sleep. theres your problem. sit up in a chair and read, i know it sounds ridiculous, but it actually makes all the difference.
a sleeping position you might find helpful as well is on your back, with a pillow under your knees, have your head look up at the ceiling and place your arm over your forehead near the hairline. when i have difficulty sleeping, thats the position i assume and generally it works. and i didnt discover it either, i was told that at a sleep clinic... doesnt mean theres a medical or logical purpose for that position being better than others, it just seems to work that way for some people. then theres also another option. most doctors would never recommend it but its a relatively easy way to get yourself back into a sleeping pattern if you've screwed it up. only let yourself have 4 hours sleep one night, go to school yes you'll be rooted, but put up with it for the whole day, go home and sleep another 4 hours straight away. get up and do whatever it is you do, get another 4 hours and by that time you'll feel really crap. that night, dont sleep in the afternoon, then go to sleep 1hr before you would normally for the next two nights but make sure you get 9hrs, then resume an 8hr sleeping pattern (thats 1hr later than the past 2 nights). just don't do that in a week and screw it up over the weekend. ahaha, and that is in no way medically approved |
i cant sleep before midnight any night of the week. its horrible.

Wow, i didn't know there was such an abundance of sleeping disorders. Assuming that you all actually have proper sleeping disorders, such as sleep apnea, insomnia and such, rather than just not being able to get to sleep for an hour.
My first advice, don't see a doctor. Its unnecessary and just overreacting. It's common for some people to go through a period of mild insomnia, where they find it difficult to sleep. This can be for many reasons, ie. stress, physical pain etc. A doctor will just tell you bullshit, because they can't accurately know why you can't sleep properly, and they might prescribe you drugs which just make you feel like shit. The most common reasons for not being able to sleep well are physical pain, surrounding conditions, stress and sleeping position. Firstly, if you have any physical discomfort while sleeping, try and sleep in a manner in which this doesn't bother you. Secondly, sleeping position, try the one kiki recommended. Try other ones. Some find a compact position comfortable, some find a spread out one better. But remember, once you find a position you like, don't move. It makes you think more, makes it harder for your heart to slow down, and makes you restless. Thirdly, if you are stressed in anyway, this will make it difficult to sleep. Try and think about other things. Make your mind focus on something dull. They say counting sheep, but this isn't good for everyone. Try and focus on just breathing in and out. Nothing too complicated. Lastly, one thing i find most important, surrounding conditions. Your body needs to lower its temperature to shut down. If you are too warm you will never sleep, or sleep well. Try and get as cool as possible without feeling cold. This makes a huge difference. |
i never used to have sleeping problems but this year im getting totally fucked because i can't sleep til late every night. This means i get little sleep so im always tired and probably more grumpy than usual
Like sexy said, temperature is a big thing imo. i cant ever wear socks in bed without completely overheating...which totally sucks in the cold whether because i struggle to find a balance between hot and cold. i should probably start playing sport again. I think if i did exercise id sleep easier. |
It's prolly nothing. Don't make a big deal out of it, like sexy said!
I have the same problem - but most of that's only cos I've got too much on my mind come bed time. Maybe you do, t00! Something about clearing your mind before you go to bed... Eh, too much effort. My sleep's a funny thing - it's an absolute bitch for me to get to sleep, and sometimes it feels like I'm lying awake all night, and sometimes even when I do manage to fall asleep and have the appropriate amount of hours sleep, I wake up exhausted. Then there are those incredibly random times I go to bed, that vary from 8pm to the wee hours of the morning, regardless what day it is, and the length of time I stay asleep.. Ah, sleep, what would I do without you <3 My recommendation: chemically induced coma. This post has been edited by prostitot: Aug 14 2007, 10:13 AM |
ooo try aromatherapy. always puts me to sleep.
or listen to a lecture or something. something realllyy boring. |
Woo Sam is back!
Seems like everyone has had a sleeping disorder on isfat! I blame you evil. When I was a small child I had serious problems getting asleep called some word I can't pronounce. I remember going to the royal children's hospital. But basically nothing worked that they gave me relaxation etc. When I was about 13 I had the horrible Hilary duff movie called A Cinderella story. So every night I used to play it over and over again until I fell asleep. After about 2 months when the movie had played for about 5 minutes I was asleep. This has backfired for me though now if i'm lying in bed watching tv or a movie I am very likely to fall asleep. But at least i'm sleeping agian! |
If you just lie in bed thinking, it becomes quite hard to fall asleep, I find something to make you stop thinking works well - You need something to make you sleep rather than just feel relaxed sometimes.
|
I find that if you have alot on your mind, do some stupid, boring and tedious homework so you brain goes, "stuff this" and then you will know you are ready for bed when you are falling asleep over your books!! I have found this works for me sometimes , as I don't get to sleep well very often.
Watching tv also helps, if you choose the right show, you will forget about whatever you are usually thinking about before bed, so your brain relaxes. But if you start sleeping and waking up feeling exhausted and have had it for a while, it may suggest you have an iron deficiancy. Then take iron tablets for a while(but it takes a little while before it works). I know, it worked for me. I agree with kiki, do something really boring. like put relaxing music on on repeat....the same songs over and over again. They also say to stay away from the caffeine (eg coffee and chocolate) a couple of hours before bed. some people swear by camomile tea to make them fall asleep. i have the problem that when i think too much i can't sleep.
one night before a general maths advanced outcome last year i was trying to sleep but my mind kept on going through complex number formulas/methods etc.... that was a very sleepless night but i got 100% so it was all good but yeh i think too much when trying to sleep. i find its sometimes just helpful to think about something calming or absolutely awesome and slowly... drift off... |
yeah i have the thinking too much issue. thats why i got into arometherapy. its weird i know. but we did it once at school and it worked and i feel straight asleep. it was awesome. u can buy aromatherapy cds n stuff, and buy the candles n stuff but make sure u buy the ones that burn out in an hr so u dont burn down ur house.

Wow, i didn't know there was such an abundance of sleeping disorders. Assuming that you all actually have proper sleeping disorders, such as sleep apnea, insomnia and such, rather than just not being able to get to sleep for an hour. Well acording to my pyschology text book it is considered a symptom of insomnia if you are: -being unable to fall asleep within 30 minues after intending to go to sleep -awakening for longer then 30 minutes durring the night -Consistenly reduced amount of total sleep -complaint of poor sleep -feeling tired durring the day also it gives 6 simple steps to a better nights sleep Make sure: Step 1: Your body understands when it is time to sleep Step 2: You have the most comfortable conditions for your body to sleep Step 3: YOur body is in the best possible condition to sleep Step 5: You learn how to stop yourself feeling anxios about sleeping Step 6: Your sleeping problems are not because of an underlying illness This post has been edited by slurpee: Aug 15 2007, 09:11 AM |

errr
Step 4: Your body understands that bed means sleep - i would have edited it but then sexy would have looked silly. This way, when i devour his brains, i wont be silly This post has been edited by slurpee: Aug 15 2007, 09:16 AM |
But thats the source of all his voluntary movment!
- Also, according to my text book, insomnia is best treated by dealing with the underlying cause of the disorder, learning relaxation or stress managment strategies, developing reguler 'going to sleep' routines and exercising regulary, or increasing Melatonin levels. Drugs = not helpfull This post has been edited by slurpee: Aug 15 2007, 09:28 AM |
Thanks a lot guys, Im still not sure why I cant sleep.
I think it has something to do with thinking too much. I didnt get to sleep untill 12:30 last night, and I tried from 10:00 And today I slept at school for two hours during the last two periods. Ive made my bed totally comfortable, and got a long body pillow to hold onto and Ive been making sure the temperature is okay but it just doesnt seem to work. Thanks for all your ideas though |
have you tried not thinking?
