Recently my friend joined a socialist group, which is very intensive in the protection of womyn’s rights. She is finding a lot of prejudice from these particular feminist extremists, who look upon a woman having a relationship with a male to be letting down the team and against feminist ideals. I’m so sick of this attitude, spread by people so invested in their ideals they can’t see that they are encouraging other negative prejudices and broad generalisations. If I hear one more person lump all men into one category, in which we are all the oppressors, all jocks, all with masculine control complexes. I’m all for seeking women’s rights, But not for diminishing those of others. When can we stop have feminism and just have humanism, stop setting up these divisions which instantly require segregation to function.

What do you think fatters?

hmm alot to get through here...

Women are required by society to sexualise themselves in pursuit of their goals by our society, men however ARE NOT! Maybe you don't care how much you get paid, living off mum and paps salary in the basement, but universally its quite a pressing issue, which I'm sure would prompt any protester from the 60's to cry out in rage, because this very fact means equality doesn't exist.

1) Saying women are required by society to sexualise themselves in order to achieve goals is a big generalization. Are you seriously saying most women in powerful/equal positions to men got there by exploiting their sexuality? If anything, saying that is just as bad as condoning the behavior you oppose.

2) Universal women's rights and local issues ie. this general topic, are totally different. I don't think women have it bad here at all.

3) Equality can't exist because, as Fridgemagnet pointed out, men and women are not equal. But they get good treatment, certainly in developed nations. From a workforce perspective, women are more likely to have children, and hence quit/take maternity leave. So if, as an employer, i hire a woman it is more likely i will have to retrain her on return from leave or have someone else trained when she leaves. For men this isn't an issue generally. Now this might sound unfair, but i'd say it's true. I know there is more to it than a practical sense, but i just mean to say it's stupid to think that men and women will be equal because of inherent differences...basically i agree with Fridgemagnet lol.

First off, the feminists of the 1960s would be enraged. Why? Women, on average, only get paid 66% of what men do. Abortion rights are still heavily contested. Rape occurs thousands of times a year (and yes, the victims are primarily women).
First of all i don't believe that 66% thing. also wtf does rape have to do with women's rights? I wasn't aware it was ingrained in our society that rape was acceptable in any way. Yet it still happens. big surprise. so does murder. It's not as if heaps of guys view women as objects, waiting to be raped.

While I don't doubt that the other posters in this thread have experienced very little oppression (that they are aware of), they should not be so complacent as to assume that simply because *they* haven't been sexually harassed, denied a late-term abortion or turned down for a job due to their genitals that no one else has.
lol you can't dismiss people's oppinions on the grounds that they haven't experienced sexual discrimination directly. Once again i'll state that sexual harassment isn't accepted in society. It's not like there are anti-discrimination organizations or laws or anything...oh wait...there....are.

QUOTE (n0lite @ Oct 7 2008, 12:57 PM) *
As for 'how girls choose to portray themselves' - no, they do not choose. As females, girls and women are socialized to accept one sort of beauty as right. How is it at all natural to slice off your body hair or plaster your face in chemicals or wear shoes that'll lead to carpal tunnel syndrome? PROTIP: it isn't.
I don't think there's a male conspiracy to make women suffer in order to please us. If anything it's women who fuel that whole industry/idea (not that i know much about it), albeit perhaps for the sake of impressing men. Again, i think this relates to the psychology of society blah blah...

edit: wow...long...*braces for TL;DRs*
