Fear, oh fear.

fear |fi(ə)r|
noun
an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat

If there is anything I cannot stand it is fear. You may ask, what has fuelled this post? Well, fear did. For the last 2 or 3 days I have been to afraid to post on isfat because I feel ‘less intelligent’ than you all and because I don’t want you to think I’m a ignorant 15 year old with no life and no future.

Posting isn’t the only thing I’m afraid to do. I’m just going to throw this out there: I like a girl & she likes me too. This shouldn’t be a problem, right? But it is.We go to a Catholic all girls’ school and I am so afraid of the shit we’ll get if we date and people find out.

I’ve come to realise that most people are constantly afraid. I mean I am almost 100% sure there is SOMETHING that you’re afraid of right now (yes, you reading this!) it might be logical or it might be completely irrational but I’m sure there’s something. What makes us this way? The media? Our parents? Society in general?
Thoughts?

Just so you know, when i saw your name as posting this thread i thought'oh yeah Lily i remember her she was alright'.

And please dont give the pseudo-intellectuals on this board even more fuel to burn on their egomatic engines. Just because someone uses big words and talks about whatever obscure fact they just learned does make someone smart.

Smart is knowing you should do more listening than talking, which people around here don't do enough.

The irrational fears part is true though, i mean ever since i saw final destination i will not use a computer with a glass screen(in case you haven't seen it a guy is using a computer and the monitor explodes causing his face to get decorated with glass).

everyone has a job today, post your irrational fear! kgo.

Thank-you Kelevra that mean's a lot to me. smile.gif

I have seen final destination! It scared me to death! Mmm.. irrational fears?
I have a few!

1. When I'm on the train going into the city and we're traveling over one of Brisbane's many bridges I make sure I'm always standing up in the middle of the carriage. I'm afraid that my weight will tip the train off the tracks and into the water.

2. I cant go to sleep unless my fan is on the highest setting because I'm afraid that if I turn it off bugs will be able to crawl into my mouth while I'm sleeping. (Yes I know they can anyway, I just figure the fan will make them blow away... or something.)

3. I can only eat soup/yoghurt/other semi-liquid foods with a tea spoon!

It's difficult (re: scary) to come out and say it, but I think I might still have the fear of asking people out (dating) that I had back in year 7-8. I can't really tell though, been at an all guys school since.

As for the more irrational, those come and go for me. I'll hear about something (like bugs crawling in my mouth while I sleep) and then for a few days/weeks I'll be really weirded out by it. I'll try to think of some of the better ones.

And Lily, I don't think there's many people on the board here who don't recognise and respect you from earlier. Heck, whenever I saw that featured thread on the main page I wondered where you'd gone!

EDIT--> Also, lulz at the train thing... but that's what irrational fears are for.

First of all, thank-you. smile.gif

Oh god, I think a lot of people are afraid of asking people out! Its really hard! No one wants to be rejected.
Dont you just love single sex schools and the opportunities they provide for their students dating-wise? -sarcasm-

I hope I didn't weird you out about the bug-crawling-into-your-mouth-at-night thing. biggrin.gif

Another thing I'm quite afraid of is one on one conversation with people. I really, really hate. I get so paranoid that I'm boring/the person is bored by what I'm saying. I think it probably stems from being insecure but still, I'd class it as an irrational fear. You'd be surprised how far I will go to avoid situations where I have to speak to people one on one.

Spiders are pure evil. I really, really hate them. I dont think I would consider it a fear though.
I dont want to step on any toes but may I ask what about dogs that frighten you? smile.gif

I'm afraid of getting hit by lightening. Has anyone else heard about that guy who got hit 7 times and didnt die? I think he killed himself.

Yeah i would put spiders on my irrational fears list. *shudder* i hate it when one touches you then for ages afterwards everything that touches you makes you flinch and get all paranoid.

I'm relatively scared of heights too, but i don't think there's any particular reason for that.

Oh i'm also scared of girls in general lol happy.gif

in answer to your question Lilly, the part about dogs that scares me is they way they jump up on people and i their sharp teeth and loud barks make me feel uneasy around them. no matter how big or small the dog is.

I feel uneasy around big dogs, but I wouldn't consider it a fear any more - it definetely was though. Spiders can be scary or not, depending on size and, if I recognise it, type. I think the thought of spiders is scarier than actually seeing one.
Heights give me a bit of a shock if/when I look down, but if I'm harnessed or something then I don't mind.

I'm pretty new to this board and all, but lily, you DEFINITELY do not seem any less intelligent than anyone else here. And considering I'm sitting here at 3 am eating honest-to-God pre-made cookie dough from a tube, you can be sure you have more of a life than at least one member here smile.gif

If you and the girl you mentioned like really each other, I say go for it! ngl, it probably won't be as easily accepted as a boy/girl coupling, but you may be surprised at how many people are cool with it. I don't know much about your situation here so sorry if I'm being dumb.

As far as irrational fears go: accidentally biting on my fork, touching velvet when my nails are bitten and finding a vein in anything I'm eating. Ewww.

Magpies and deep, dark water.
I'm not too sure why.

Maybe because Magpies are the evil spawn of Satan! I mean I'm not afraid of them myself but I totally accept that they're evil little children of unwed mothers.
As for my irrational fears;
  • snakes (but I'm working on it) used to be terrible, like if I saw a snake on the TV or a photo in a book I'd have to look away.
  • Turning my back on a cat; I don't trust the little buggers, unless I'm trying to exude an aura of pure confidence you won't see me turn my back on a cat.
  • Girls. - Edit: Thought about it a bit more and that is a totally rational fear.
  • Waking up in small spaces; it appears I'm claustrophobic in that time between stopping sleeping and waking up and my body flips out if it's in a small space. So I'm not afraid o it per se, but I class it as a fear.

'nd yeah, I think that's it. If I remember more I'll post them.

Okay some of you are talking about fears of snakes or spiders and other things.... which most humans have. These fears are said to be either evolutionary or genetic. You will find that many animals, suck as mice, are also afraid of snakes because they possess a particular danger to them, just like snakes are threatening to us. So these are not irrational as such but are mechanisms for survival.

A lot of you are talking about irrational fears. Well an intense irrational fear is known as a phobia and an overall sense of fear with a vague or unidentifiable cause is known as anxiety.

Phobias can occur through conditioning of a person to behave in a certain way. Surely some of you would have heard of Little Albert and how he was conditioned to fear all things furry. Well this would be a form of phobia because a furry teddy bear wont hurt hm. People have real fears of things and yes they often seem a little crazy but they are truely real. There are people seriously scared of spoons, frogs or other things that may seem a bit silly or odd (known as specific phobias), public places (agoraphobia) and even socialising or eating out in public (known as social phobias).

If any of you experience any of these things to a point that it greatly disrupts your day to day living, I suggest seeking a form of psychological help.

However from what everyone has posted so far... it doesnt sound too serious (unless the seriousness was masked) which was good.

As for my crazy fear... I cannot sleep without setting an alarm clock because I am afraid that if I dont set it I wont wake up and I will die...
