Thinking about it. Been at uni for 3/4 of a year now. Thinking about how much it is costing, and it's getting me down sad.gif $6k + a year, 5 years or so of that, $30k. How to pay it off? Working! Working so many hours to pay off for the hours that you paid to spend learning... hate the idea of that.

Why is uni so expensive sad.gif Why can't it be like high school! It's basically the same thing, but nowhere near as personal, therefore should be cheaper.

Rant over!

what course are you doing? and how much do you love your course?? what would you rather do? just think about how much your life is going to improve once you finish your degree.

What sucks is that not only are the tuition fees expensive, but any textbooks and required matierals, equipment or whatever too. No wonder uni students are so poor!!

It's all the government's fault I tell you, and the institution's greed. yeah nuff said by me.
Simonsmp
Lol, the government actually contribute a fair bit to the CSP courses, like 2/3 of the cost, but its still a lot left over. I'm doing a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne uni. I hate the course tongue.gif But I want to do post grad medicine or physio or something, so have to do this and all these subjects that don't relate at all. But once I'm out of uni, all I can think about is going to work 9 - 5 tongue.gif But if I'm a physio, that would be awesome smile.gif And I'd be getting paid a fair bit, so i guess thats a bit of an up smile.gif
lozinabox
hahaha the professions that you want to do are more than 9-5 buddy... esp medicine.. their hours can be 36 or more hrs straight without sleep..... and sometimes you don't actually go home but sleep in the hospital.....

ON CALL ROOM FOR THE WIN !
Uni is fun =)
Super duper fun ! I don't quite mind the idea of paying it off. It's not like you won't have any money whilst paying it off, whether it back to the uni, or back to a parent that paid for it.

Granted the thought of being in debt for the next 15 years isn't such a happy thought - you'll always have the memories =)
Uni is what you make out of it. It's either a 20,000$ experience, or one where you found friends, made important life decisions, and ultimately found yourself =)
I like the more optimistic view.

Atleast you know what you want to do. Most people fuck around at uni for years before actually deciding which course they're interested in, and have to start all over.

SILVER LINING, DAMNIT.

lol

step 1: go to uni
step 2: ???
step 3: good experiences and profit.

Jokes aside, the National party in New Zealand is claiming a new scheme which will write off 10k of student fees a year for doctors and nurses who stay and work in the country after they graduate. if i had put the thought in and decided being a doctor or nurse was for me i would hit that like i couldnt miss.
Sam
Well I was always planning on going to uni

Until I found out that I can go to any tafe course for $100

So i'm starting to look at tafe >_<
lozinabox
Sam don't make that your deciding factor.

Go for what you really want to do, not because of the cost. You can get CSP help and stuff.. as well as scholarship and grants for those who have a poor socio-economic status, etc. etc.

Would you rather do some TAFE course you are mildly interested in or do a Uni course on something you absolutely love?

But then again... if TAFE is what you think is for you, GO FOR IT! biggrin.gif

for those already in uni, what's some advice to someone going to start uni next year?

and does anyone live on campus?
is it cheaper and/or better?

and is it really that hard to find all the money =[
lozinabox
Okay I don't know about living on campus as I live at home, but it is better if you live at home if you are reasonably close to uni. As far as uni fees goes there is this wonderful thing called CSP or Commonwealth-Supported Places which means you can pay it off later. Ultimately it is cheaper to live at home if you are close to uni but if you are far away you may need to live on campus. If you have concerns about this the best people to ask would have to be the Universities you are applying to. Many universities have scholarships for rural students that help fund stuff like this so it is ideal to look into those. However you will need to do this soon as there are deadlines for applying for scholarships which is roughly the end of Oct or some time in November- but don't quote me on it.

thanks.

i live in newcastle, which is near sydney, but i'm moving out to melbourne at the end of this year and going to deakin uni. it's fine - i've applied and everything, but the being in a different state makes it so much harder to gather information.
i'm not eligible for a scholarship - i'm just an average student etc etc. does CSP go for everyone in every state? - bad english i know, it's too late to be up.

but thankyou for that =]

Fridgemagnet
If you're an Australian citizen, you can get CSP. If you have trouble finding a job at first, I think being in a different state to your parent/guardian qualifies you for independence and centrelink, so that might help out at first.

Copied it off Australia. There are 5 different schemes i can think of off the top of my head that try and get australians into the country, 4 of which involve giving medical students/junior doctors money. Lots of students in Australia get $24,000 in cash every year, not just 10grand off fees.

Is there a point? im quite sure noone gives a fuck who came up with a scheme to keep doctors in their own country because the pay in Europe or wherever is better first, i was just pointing it out.

Uni is really expensive, i so cannot wait to be fnished with it, then i'm going to fly overseas and work because i cannot stand australia. but it'll get you further in life than a gosh (groan) awful tafe course, i'd apply to uni for a better long term future.

although you could do a HECS route, that takes off heaps off the financial load, and either pay that amount upfront or defer it till later on. getting your texts from the local or academic libraries, rather than buying them helps heaps too.
