High fashion...I'm talking crazy runway stuff here...I hear so many people contest that these millions of dollars spent creating this world is a waste of space....Is it...or is it art?
Also, is having style something that can be aquired? Can you look just as good when your poor if you know what suits you...mmmm cause I know people that spend thousands of dollars on their wardrobe and to tell the truth probably shouldn't try, and then I also know people who spend like ten bucks at savers and look, smokin.
I think I just answered my own question, but if you have any stories to add or opinions to bring...?

when i was surfing the net the other day, i discovered that recently in japan some japanese person held a fashion parade showing off over 200 different types of adult dypers. HAHAHAHAHA that was a really big suprise for me.

High fashion really is a waste of time. Just look at the last page of any Melbourne MX, seriously. It's all disgusting and a huge waste of well everything. Actually I feel fashion in general pretty much is. Wear what you're commutable in, and if you're not commutable unless on the off chance that you get hit by a train then the insurance payout for your clothes will be twice that of for your life/health then well you got some serious problems.

fashion is just like postmodernist art. Something that has gone crazy and no one understands anymore.

I usually go for what I personally like.. and not what the latest "trend" is.
I'm not talking about consumer fashion, I'm talking fashion which is slaved away at, which is designed and executed perfectly...
Although on a side note, it's really funny to see people talking about being unsuseptable to the machine, with their individual tastes etc etc. But regardless of what you wear your wearing something based on your understanding of fashion and based on what has happened culturally in high fashion, which has seeped it;s way down into comericial reproduction...ie. Summer prints come out...they are reproduced by chinese factory, sold at valley girl and the like then three years later the individuals are buying them from op shops...
I think there's alot of work and artistic merit in high fashion, but as always the big corperations take over and taint the industry, they did it in film, in photography, in archeitecture, in acting....it seems the same thing has happened again

Okay; warning I'm about to totally derail this topic; but as a architecture student I need to know what you mean by "they did it in... architecture" Can you give any examples?

I disagree with this whole thread.
SO NER.
People like feeling pretty. It's not their fault if they just happen to feel pretty in what is considered "pretty" at the time.
What people don't realize is that you don't need thousands of dollars to dress fashionably. Once something is "in" - everybody replicates it. I don't think its a waste of money at all.
My mother is a florist as a side job. She loves flowers and that. Yesterday she went out and bought two huge stems of orchids. Generally they retail for 50 dollars each, and she bought them both for 35. That's 70 dollars in total that, in my opinion, she wasted. 70 dollars that I would've rather spent on a pair of shoes. A pair of shoes that she would've thought to be silly and a waste of money.
Do you see where I'm going with this?
Being in fashion is a hobbie. You don't have to agree with people's life choices and with how they choose to spend their money, but remember - they're not agreeing with yours, either.

yuh, i spend alot of money on books and get made fun of alot for that, heres the main ones.
Why read books when you canch just watch tv?
Once you have read a book its worthless, why not just rent the movies.
it infuriates me but is completely logical to them, rawr!

hahah i love books so watching the movies would totally ruin them for me....however the LOTR movies were good

fashion is so so. i think it depends on what kind of trends you are following whether it is stupid or not. If the trend you are following is practical-then its good, but if it is unpractical (like those who were massive stilletoes to uni) then its stupid

Hm. Everyone has made really valid points, so I won't bother disagreeing with anyone.
I really like "high fashion".
It's impractical, expensive, and sometimes looks awful.
Just like all art.
I really can't justify being opposed to creative expression.
There is certainly something wonderful about abstract concepts made matter via the efforts cocaine-fueled models and designers.

I have to say Captain, that was quite a good post. I mean, people have been complaining that it's just a waste, but the same reasoning could really be used on a lot of art these days.

High fashion is mostly stupid. Design things people will wear damnit. Also, models walk weird, anyone noticed this?

I can appreciate a fine sculpture in a gallery, doesn't mean I want it in my house. It mightn't fit my practical everyday use, but it doesn't diminish it's artistic integrity.

Oct 6 2008, 10:16 AM
When it's florescent yellow and orange can you still think it has "artistic integrity"
roboito
Oct 6 2008, 10:19 AM
Art isn't just about making people happy, it's about inspiring different emotions from a large palette, sometimes florescent orange or yellow is the only way for an artist to convey a particular feeling for emotion.

i don't like band t-shirts.
there's something about them that seems wrong.
i suppose because there's no need to tell the world you listen to a band.
on the other hand, it seems fashionable to wear t-shirts featuring bands you don't listen to.
the ramones, i suppose are a fine example.
i like afi plenty, same with blaqk audio.

Also Misfits.
But i wear band t-shirts like most of the time. I can't really explain why...i think it's kinda cool to represent fo bands, yo. i don't think there's anything wrong with telling the world you listen to a band anyway.
Also in relation to some earlier posts:
1) i refuse to acknowledge this high fashion stuff as art, mostly because i'm repulsed by some of those designer folk. But also because clothes are clothes...if you want to wear whatever then go ahead. But a fashion show doesn't really express any particular feeling in my opinion. That said, i'm probably not cultured enough lol. I'm too ignorant to appreciate the masterpieces of art-fashion
2) Blaqk Audio fails. those guys should focus on making afi good again. or focus more on Blaqk Audio so they get it out of their system / distance from afi...and Davey Havok =/= sex, i'm affraid. For some reason he reminds me of wiL from Aiden now *shudder*, which is quite disturbing. prolly coz that horrible band ripped afi hard. Oh and lol at saying davey has no fans.
